12 Second Physics Game Prototype
Aim
Puzzle games can be quiet fascinating especially when there is more than one way to get to the answer. I believed being able to use physics would let me create such opportunities. This game is meant to:
- Present simple challenges/puzzles that you must solve within the time limit.
- Give the player enough freedom to be able to find multiple solutions within the physical limitations of the game and its components.
Feedback
After some playtesting for the 5 levels that I have made, the general feedback was:
- The controls can be intimidating and confusing for players; this feeling is heightened exponentially due to the 12 second time limit.
- The puzzles looked simple but players would initially have to try multiple times to get it right as they did not immediately have a precise judgement of how the ball would react with the platforms.
Outcomes
As the time limit seemed to put the players in a rather stressful position. I feel like I got a little something right, as keeping the puzzles fairly simple was definitely the right idea. Players had to more or less lose the first level a few times to get used to the controls or the ball physics, which wasn’t necessarily intended on my part. The idea of an initial trial room or a simple tutorial would solve a lot of problems for most players, but implementing that within the week I used to make this prototype was a bit too many things on my plate.
