Procedural Art Prototype
Aim
My general interest in music aided by a few friends who make music from time to time instigated this idea. The primary goal was to gain a better understanding of how audio data is digitized and use that knowledge as a basis to try and recreate something old, as a means of learning something new. In short:
- Gain a better understanding of how audio data is digitized and use it to create interesting visuals, possibly followed by interactions.
- Create a soothing and enjoyable audio visualizer. The target experience is similar to that of the old version of Microsoft Windows Media Player visualizer (Windows XP era).
Feedback
After sharing a few videos with friends of the final outcome after a few days of development the general feedback was as follows:
- Visuals are too noisy and take up too much of the screen.
- It’s hard to tell what’s going on. Enough that you don’t want to look at it anymore.
- Colours were too dull.
Outcomes
Luckily addressing the concerns raised by the feedback was fairly simple.
A few hours of changes and playing around with some internal values allowed me to create an enjoyable and soothing experience for my friends(testers).
The greatest takeaway for me was to be able to create something while learning about something I find interesting and have something to show for it. The only regret being; I was not able to make the experience interactive in any way for the viewer.
